Shradh is performed on the tithi — the lunar day — on which your ancestor died, not the English date. Enter what you know and we will find it.

How this is calculated — and where it can differ from your family’s panchang

A tithi is the angle between the Moon and the Sun, divided into thirty parts. The Shradh day for a tithi is the day on which that tithi is present during Aparahna Kaal — the fourth of the five equal parts of daylight, roughly 1:00 to 3:30 PM.

Aparahna Kaal is built from local sunrise and sunset. That is the entire reason your dates are not India’s dates. Change the city and the calendar genuinely changes — it is not a rounding error, and it is not a website being careless.

This calculator agrees with Drik Panchang on the years we have tested, including the one-day shift for North America. But panchang traditions differ on how to resolve a tithi that begins late in the afternoon, and a family’s own tradition may resolve it differently. The two ends of the fortnight are reliable. If your ancestor’s tithi falls in the disputed middle, ask your family pandit — or ask us and we will check it for free, whether or not you ever book with us.
