What Rahu Kaal actually is
Rahu Kaal is one eighth of the day. Take the time from sunrise to sunset, divide it into eight equal parts, and one of them belongs to Rahu — which part depends on the day of the week. That is the whole of it. It is arithmetic, not prophecy, and it is why the timing shifts with your city and with the season.
The tradition treats it as an inauspicious window for beginning something: signing an agreement, opening a shop, setting out on a journey for the first time, fixing a marriage. It is a caution about starting, not a curse on existing.
If you have to do something during Rahu Kaal, do it.
An ambulance does not consult the panchang. Neither should you. If your child is ill, if the exam is at 3 PM, if the flight leaves when it leaves, if the interview is scheduled and cannot move — go. Rahu Kaal is a preference in the tradition, not a wall.
It has never applied to work already underway, to duties you cannot postpone, to medicine, to study, to feeding people, or to prayer. It has never applied to the ordinary business of being alive.
If a website tells you that answering a phone call during Rahu Kaal will ruin your career, close it. Whoever wrote that is farming your anxiety, and they are hoping you will pay them to make it stop.
What it is traditionally used for
- Auspicious beginnings — griha pravesh, a new business, buying property or a vehicle, the first day of a journey, fixing a wedding date.
- Muhurat selection — when there is a genuine choice of time, the tradition suggests choosing elsewhere in the day. That is all it is: a preference, exercised when you have the luxury of one.
What it is not for
- Cancelling a hospital appointment.
- Refusing to eat, work, drive or leave the house.
- Explaining, after the fact, why something went wrong. That is hindsight wearing a costume.
- Stopping a puja. Prayer has no inauspicious hour.
Yamaganda, Gulika and Abhijit
They are computed exactly the same way — eighths of the daylight, assigned by weekday. Most sites list only Rahu Kaal because fear is easier to monetise than balance.
- Yamaganda Kaal — traditionally avoided for new beginnings, like Rahu Kaal.
- Gulika Kaal — also cautioned against, though several traditions regard it as far less severe.
- Abhijit Muhurat — the auspicious one. The eighth of fifteen muhurtas, sitting either side of true midday. It is considered so favourable that it is said to overcome most other doshas of timing. Many traditions do not observe it on Wednesdays.
If you are choosing a time for something important, choose Abhijit. It is a far more useful thing to know than which hour to be frightened of, and it is on this page precisely because almost nobody else bothers to show it to you.

How is Rahu Kaal calculated?
Take sunrise to sunset and divide it into eight equal parts. Rahu takes the 8th part on Sunday, the 2nd on Monday, the 7th on Tuesday, the 5th on Wednesday, the 6th on Thursday, the 4th on Friday and the 3rd on Saturday. Because it is built from local sunrise, it genuinely differs between Delhi and Chennai, and between June and December.
Can I do a puja during Rahu Kaal?
Yes. Prayer, worship and japa have no inauspicious hour. Rahu Kaal is a caution about beginning worldly undertakings, not about turning towards the divine.
What if I have no choice but to act during Rahu Kaal?
Then act. Rahu Kaal is a preference within the tradition, exercised when you have a genuine choice of timing. It has never been a prohibition on living your life — on going to hospital, sitting an exam, catching a flight or doing your job.
Does Rahu Kaal apply on Sundays?
Yes — it falls in the eighth and final part of the day, so it lands in the late afternoon, roughly 4:30 to 6:00 PM in most Indian cities. See the exact window above.
What is the difference between Rahu Kaal and Abhijit Muhurat?
They are opposites. Rahu Kaal is a window the tradition advises against for new beginnings. Abhijit Muhurat, around midday, is one of the most favourable — regarded as strong enough to overcome most other timing doshas. If you are choosing a moment, aim at Abhijit rather than merely avoiding Rahu.
